Definition
The fascia is a fibrous connective tissue, thin but very strong, that envelops, supports, connects, and separates the various structures of the body (muscles, organs, vessels, nerves). It forms a continuous three-dimensional network throughout the body.
Anatomy
Several types of fascia can be distinguished:
- Superficial fascia:
- Located beneath the skin (in the hypodermis).
- Composed of loose connective tissue and fat.
- Contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.
- Deep fascia:
- Surrounds muscles, bones, nerves, and vessels.
- Denser, more resistant, and organized.
- Forms partitions between muscle groups (e.g., septa, aponeuroses).
- Visceral fascia (or splanchnic fascia):
- Envelops internal organs.
- Allows for their support, movement, and function.
Functions
Fasciae play several key roles:
- Structural support: Maintains and organizes body tissues.
- Force transmission: Participates in the transmission of muscular forces.
- Gliding and mobility: Enables sliding between structures (muscles, organs, etc.).
- Protection: Acts as a barrier against shocks and infections.
- Communication: Contains sensory receptors (proprioception, pain, tension, etc.).
- Immune and metabolic role: Especially for fasciae rich in immune cells (like the superficial fascia).
